Glutton for Praise

I've often said the worst thing about Bryn Mawr is that no one will ever tell you when you've done a good job. Part of the reason I take classes at Penn so often is that occasionally they will write "Great paper!" or "Excellent point!" rather than "YOUR DOES NOT EQUAL YOU ARE" on your papers. The amount of times people have told me "great job" at Bryn Mawr has been minimal. It always keeps me striving for perfection, yet also always makes me second guess my work. I'm serious, it sucks.

A few weeks ago I got an e-mail from a friend asking me if I would participate in Dorm Olympics. They were going to be holding an event called "Pie Your HA" and as an HA I was expected to participate and be pied. I agreed and asked how points would be assigned in that event, no reply. Dorm Olympics are never really well attended, people usually have better things to do...like stare at walls or walk around aimlessly complaining about the mud. I had no intentions of showing up before or staying after being pied, not when there was mud and cracked sidewalks to be complained about.

As I got more and more emails about the olympics I began to get slightly excited. They seemed like a great opportunity to be praised. I decided to check them out for myself around 1 o clock today, an hour before my own event was to begin. I showed up at the front steps of the Campus Center and announced to no one in particular that I was there to Dorm Olympic. No one responded so I tried again. This time someone told me that I could either go to dodgeball, Guitar Hero or sudoku. I'm terrible at Guitar Hero and wasn't in the mood for dodgeball, so I went inside to do some sudoku. The energy in the room could best be described as an energy similar to taking the SATs. People were hunched over their papers scribbling away. I grabbed a paper and began to fill it out. I had limited time so I was pretty proud of how much I accomplished. Unfortunately, people easily beat me having had the full five minutes to finish it. I was sure that I had the next round in the bag, however. I grabbed my next sheet and went to work. When the five minutes ended I had about 3/4ths of it filled out. Since no one had shouted out that they were done I assumed that I would be crowned the victor. Nope, over on the other side of the room the representatives from Merion dorm had each filled theirs out perfectly. They got a lot of points. I was determined to shut them up on the next round. Unfortunately that one went to hell and I could barely get any. Merion again beasted. After that we switched to Boggle, which I am awesome at. But of course, Merion was better. Effing nerds that live in Merion. I swear they spend all of their time practicing for this.

By that point it was 2 o clock and I needed to get pied. I went outside and was handed a poncho. A few other HA's and I drew bullseyes on them and started to stir up excitement. Pie tins were filled with whipped cream and it was time to go. The points system was still ambiguous, but we let it go. We were assured that as HA's we had already secured three extra points for our dorm, so we were all pumped about that. The first HA went up and got a pie to her shoulder and torso. Whipped cream splattered on her face and we all laughed. Isn't this hilarious. My turn was next I set myself up and started heckling the throwers. I closed my eyes and realized "CRAP! If this thing hits me in the face it's going to hurt!" Luckily the first thrower only hit my shoulder. Ha. Everyone at this school throws like a girl! The next tosser came up and I again closed my eyes and relaxed. Then in a flash, SPLAT! Straight shot right to the face. The green exploded in shouts of "OHHHHHHHH!" I was covered in whipped cream and gunk. The whipped cream was seeping into my hair and already drying on my face in the sun. I couldn't even open my eyes. It was awesome. All around me people began applauding and telling me what a good sport I was. Is that praise? Awesome.

At the end of that event I was told that at the next table over the watermelon eating contest was about to begin. I forgot all about the stomach distress I had been in two days prior and eagerly ran over there. I was running on adrenaline by now. After everyone got situated we dove in face first and devoured our slabs of watermelon. I came in third in the event, quite possibly the award that I am the most proud of as I was up against the rugby team who take no prisoners in any form of competition be it rugby or a game of go fish. I turned to Angie,  the organizer, whipped cream smeared in my hair and watermelon all over my face and asked 'What's next!?!?! What's next?!?!?!" I was like a kid at Chuckie Cheese. Angie looked taken aback and said that the next event wouldn't be for a half hour and would be the tug-o-war. I looked at my shoes and realized they wouldn't be great for tug-o-war, so I told her I was going to change them and that I would be back. She laughed and said 'Alright, you go do that' I could tell she thought I was insane, but I don't care I was loving it. The sun was out, there was friendly competition, I had whipped cream in my hair. Life was good.

I raced down Rock 3rd and started banging on doors to try and get people to come out to Olympics. Nicky practically bit my head off, yelling that she had to write her thesis. Ari was pissed that I didn't tell her that there was going to be an event where she could throw a pie at me. Nevermind the fact that I sent an e-mail to the hall earlier in the week. Drew was excited, but I told him he was not actually allowed to participate which made him sad. I switched my pants and shoes and ran back out to the green. A rather heated capture the flag game was going down but otherwise things were taking a break. I did the wander around thing, trying to look cool but really making sure that no one started a tug-o-war without me. I am that lame. Once I get my mind wrapped around something I can't stop.

The tug-o-war started eventually and was unfortunately marred by a rather serious injury. Don't wrapped the rope around your waist if you're not at the end, people, it ended poorly for one of the other competitors. After that unfortunate incident everyone sort of milled about looking guilty as if we had all somehow planned to injure someone. It was suggested that we move inside for a game of charades, next on the docket. Once inside, however, no one could think of a  way to assign a points system to charades so instead we just played Taboo. Here my partner Kendra and I BEASTED everyone else. There was no contest. We were incredible. We were the Usain Bolts of the competition. We did a "this doesn't count for us" round and STILL beat everyone. Nicky had joined us by this point and was starting to campaign for us to get ready to go to dinner. Not before the water balloon toss Nicky!

The water balloon toss was an epic fail for me. Two rounds and both times Nicky and I were the second people out. Oh well. I played a "this doesn't count" round with another girl and had the water balloon explode on me, that was when I knew Dorm Olympics had come to an end.

Before we could leave, however, we had to go to the awards ceremony. A really pathetic gathering of the 8 people left in the corner of the Campus Center. Here is where the praise was handed out. Somehow I managed to gather 7 medals. I don't remember participating in 7 events, but I was told that i not only participated but EXCELLED in 7 different events. As quite possibly the only member of Rockefeller dorm that participated (save for two frosh who played Guitar Hero) I managed to get us a second place finish. After collecting my 7 medals we were informed that there were Chocotacos in the cooler next to us, leading to a massive hog pile of people grabbing for Chocotacos (background: they used to give us Chocotacos in the dining hall before we became poor. Now they are rarely brought out on super special occasions). They truly are the greatest ice cream novelty.

Nicky and I walked back to Rock, my medals clanging with every step. My arms full of ice cream novelties, as I was told to "take as many as I'd like". I held my head up high and smiled as if I had just won gold in Beijing. Nicky laughed "It's really not hard to please you, is it?", she wondered. I shook my head "No, it really isn't. Just tell me I did something well and I'll be happy" I replied. Nicky quietly nodded before saying "Seriously, take a shower, your hair smells awful".

And yes, before you ask, I am fully aware that if I went anywhere other than Bryn Mawr I would be beat up in a second. I find joy in the little things in life....most find it endearing.

Doc Night: In Which I Get Sick

No Doc Night recap today. I ate a Kit Kat yesterday and was immediately thrown into stomach distress (why? I have no clue). I pulled myself and my heating pad down to Doc Night and lasted no more than 15 minutes. It's sad, because it looked like a great documentary. It was another live action role playing one that seemed to have better characters than Darkon. I'll have to watch it on my own time.

In the mean time, check out the new poll. Sarah says it's more of a trivia question than a poll, I assure you, it is not.

The link of the week is sent by Drew. One can never have enough Paul Rudd

Doc Night: In Which Werner Returns to Our Lives

10:05-Drew will be presenting tonight. Paige is unfortunately in Boston tonight at a job interview, so she has requested an in-depth blog tonight to catch her up. I shall do my best.

10:06-Drew ditched us at dinner tonight (full disclosure, I also ditched the group, but that's a side note) anyway, we're fuming.

10:07-Drew's speech: Is there such thing as insanity in penguins? Now, we'll find out.

10:08-Nicky claims that the guy from "Grounded For Life" is her father. How is this relevant? I'm not sure.

10:09-Apparently we'll be watching "Encounters at the End of the World" a Werner Herzog original about penguins.

10:10-Drew screwed up and can't get the dvd to work

10:11-Oh Werner, it's so good to hear your voice again

10:13-Here's what I've got so far, Werner is going to Antarctica on a military plane. He does not know how he got on the plane, I'm not sure if this is a metaphor or if he is actually confused as to how he got on the plane.

10:14-Werner doesn't want to make a documentary about penguins. He wants....god knows what but there is now a cartoon of a gorilla riding a donkey off into the sunset on the screen right now.

10:15-They are discussing a documentary about a boat that was frozen into the water of Antarctica. I'm more interested in all of the puppies that were on the boat. Nicky, who has apparently seen the documentary, informs me that all of those puppies were eaten.

10:16-Our first subject used to work with Mayans. Apparently when he first arrived in the Mayan community he was accused of wanting to steal children. The man feels the need to clarify that he was not there to steal children.

10:18-Ari is laughing about someone getting killed by a machete. In typical Werner fashion, this woman was not killed by a machete in Antarctica, but somewhere completely unrelated.

10:20-Our next subject has the tagline "Philosopher, tractor driver"

10:25-"This iceberg is bigger than the one that took downt he titanic. It's bigger than the country that BUILT the Titanic" A lot of things are bigger than Northern Ireland.

10:28-I'm starting to think Drew lied and that this isn't about penguins....

10:29-Apparently people at the Antarctic base camp freak out when the ice cream machine goes down. I would think ice cream would be the last thing they want.

10:32-Everyone at the base camp has to go through survival school before being allowed to leave the camp. To simulate white outs they put buckets over their head.  While I recognize the point of this exercise, it's hilarious. They hold onto a rope and try to find their instructor. The man at the front of the line screws up and thus they all screw up. Failure is always hilarious.

10:36-Werner is angry that the weather is so nice. He is only happy when it is storming.

10:39-Werner pronounces laboratory "La-Bore-A-Tory". Cracks me up every time. Even though that is probably the way it is supposed to be pronounced.

10:42-We're discussing whether or not everyone at the camp is hooking up with each other. They have to be? Right?

10:43-People are lying on the ground listening for seals. Werner seems to think that this scene needs to last for 5 straight minutes

10:45-Man with funny fingers. Werner is fascinated. I really wish I could see life the way Werner sees it 24/7

10:47-"Sam P is the head of the dive team....we found him in a pensive mood". Aw, this is his last Antarctic dive. He's sad

10:49-Werner's take on Sam's talk? "Man only came to land to escape the horrors of the sea"

10:50-Nicky could have used her biology degree to become an under-ice diver. Instead she just studies aphids.

10:51-That being said under-ice diving is terrifying. HOLY MOLY crazy things live under the ice.

10:54-Sam likes to show doomsday scientific movies to his workers. Great. Great motivational tool

10:58-They drilled a huge hole in the ice and now they're going to blow it up. WHOA! THAT WAS AWESOME!. Not sure why they did it, but it was awesome.

10:59-Werner compares the divers to "priests preparing for mass"

11:00-Ah, that's why they blew up the hole, to create a diving area.

11:05-Complicated science stuff that I don't understand but I'm sure Nicky does

11:06-The scientists begin rehearsing for a "late night outdoor concert"

11:07-Nicky deems their performance "good, not great" which is quickly becoming our group motto.

11:08-It is 1am at the base and you would think it was 3 in the afternoon it's that bright out.

11:09-The smokers keep smoking near the door and it smells terrible in here

11:10-Werner cuts off one of his subjects with a voiceover that begins "To make a long story short....". Classic Werner.

11:11-Wow, Antarctica has dorms. I thought everyone was living in tents.

11:13-I don't know how we got here, but someone is performing her famous "Travel as hand luggage act" in which she stuffs herself in a suitcase.

11:15-In further "crazy things in bags" news, this one man is able to keep a inflatable boat in his  backpack. Now THAT is economy packing.

11:18-Apparently Jamaica has a stake in Antarctica. You get one bobsled team and you're suddenly a cold weather country.

11:19-Now we're talking to a guy who apparently pogo sticked to Antarctica?

11:20-Finally, penguins

11:21-The penguin expert does not like human contact. Werner struggles to keep the conversation going. His best effort? "I hear there are gay penguins, can you talk about them?" Werner and I both have the same awkward response when struggling to keep conversation going.

11:22-The penguin expert prefers to talk about penguin prostitution.

11:24-Suicidal penguin. Werner asks "but why?". God I love this man

11:25-Apparently penguins get disoriented and instead of heading towards the feeding ground they head in the opposite direction and starve to death. We're all upset, except Nicky who says "Hey! It's natural selection! Let'em go!"

11:26-Now we're on a volcano. The volcanologist informs us that if the volcano errupts then you should keep your eye on the lava at all times. Do not run.

11:27-The cameras that they use to film the volcano were originally developed to track prison riots.

11:28-Into the volcano. Damn. That's impressive.

11:32-Werner's a downer

11:41-HOT AIR BALLOON! Katelyn: And he just got my attention back. Sums up my thoughts exactly

11:42-Whoops, helium balloon, not hot air balloon. My mistake

11:48-Very relaxing movie. Classic Werner at times. Thumbs up.

Past Week: Cliff Notes Style

Thursday
  • Beautiful
  • Went to the zoo
  • The zoo is impossible to get to
  • Between parking and admission IT COSTS 30 DOLLARS TO GO TO THE ZOO!
  • If the zoo hadn't been so impossible to get to, I would never have paid the 30 dollars. But I'll be dammed if I was turning around without seeing a giraffe or two
  • Enjoyed that it was the end of the day and the zoo was empty. Strolled through the cat house at my own rate. Was scared to death when I ran into one of those damned zoo volunteers. Struggled to think of a question on the spot to ask her as she wasn't letting me pass without one. All I could come up with was "Can you breed the black jaguar with the regular jaguar?" She stared at me blankly before responding "of course you can". She clearly thinks I'm a jaguar racist.
  • The small mammal house is by far the most under-appreciated part of that zoo.
  • The African Safari is by far the most overrated
  • The okapi and the rhino are having a torrid affair, you heard it here first.

Friday
  • Rain. Lots and lots of rain. In the morning at least.
  • Walked to Ardmore once the rain let off, bought the 1995 classic "The Big Green" on VHS at the thrift store for one dollar
  • Bought a cute sweater at Banana Republic for not one dollar.
  • Played the doodle game with Paige and Nicky. By far the best game ever. You draw a doodle on a piece of paper then pass it to the person next to you. That person then has to create a picture from your doodle and provide a caption. My favorite was "Michael Phelps Swims Faster When Being Chased By a Shark". I'm sure you can imagine what that picture looks like
  • Saw Adventureland. We all know how that one ended.
Saturday
  • Went for a walk with Nicky at Valley Forge National Park.
  • Despite what certain other people thought, it was a glorious day.
  • Explored the reconstructed cabins. Accidentally found two historical re-enactors inside one. They started to talk before Nicky held up her hands and said "Hahah, we're just looking around" then turned away. Rather than allow them to maintain their dignity I just stood where I was and started laughing. They were less than pleased. As a former historical re-enactor, I can commiserate, but I still think it was hilarious.
  • Went up to Erin's to watch the Nova game. It became very clear very fast that Nova was NOT winning the game. The bar was full of students and none of them watched passed the second half. Oh well, it was a good try.
Sunday
  • After the success of the Valley Forge trip Nicky and I decided to take another walk in another park.
  • Rounded up Ari and set off towards the mysterious "Fort Washington State Park"
  • Ari casually mentioned that all museums in Doylestown were free that day.
  • I immediately turned the car around and off we went to the Mercer Museum.
  • The Mercer Museum is awesome. It is a museum focused on 18th and 19th century American culture. Basically, it is a giant cement mansion that is just filled with...stuff. Even more awesome was watching Nicky explore it. At each room she shrieked "TEXTILES!" "BAKING EQUIPMENT!" OOOOO! BASKET MAKING!"
  • The Michner Museum Art Gallery was less exciting, but still enjoyable. They had an exhibit on paper crafts including some Wycinanki. Nicky's response? "Marianna, you no longer impress me". Balls, I have work to do.
  • It was weird to be in Doylestown considering I hung out there fairly often during high school. I kept looking around corners because I was convinced I was going to run into a high school teacher and would have to justify my life's hopes and dreams.
Monday
  • My first Monday without any classes. I sat in front of my computer with Powerpoint open for about 5 straight hours.
  • To make myself feel productive I went to Target to buy dish soap for the hall and milk for me. I could have gone somewhere closer, but that wouldn't have wasted nearly enough time.
  • Slipped in the parking lot on a wet line, stubbed my toe (why was I wearing flip-flops again?) blood everywhere. Limped inside Target to buy bandaids and neosporin. Unholy amount of blood is pouring out of my toe but is luckily contained to my flip flop so we don't need to worry about freaking Target out here. Children are passing me by and pointing at me, leading to their mothers giving me angry looks. I'm sorry for bleeding, really, I am, I'll try to control my ability to bleed in the future. Managed to get first aid needs easily, grabbed the soap and the milk so I wouldn't have to make a return trip. Bought the stuff, limped out of there and back to my car. By now it was pouring so I'm avoiding puddles like they're landmines so that I don't have to worry about getting gangrene. By some luck I have a wet nap in my car and am able to clean off the wound and dress it. My life is hard.
  • Went to squash.

Squash Club Update

Emma gets the quote of the night.

Mike (coach): Alright, so let's go over the drop shot. Experienced players will use the drop shot roughly three times a rally, however for players of your level it will probably be a rally winner.
Emma: Ah, so it's sort of like the serve in that way....

We're not that good.

Movies to NOT see when you're a soon to be unemployed college grad

Adventureland.

You also shouldn't see it if you like good movies, because it was terrible. Here is the story.

Adventureland is the story of a recent college grad, James, from an unnamed college although it is implied that it is a prestigious liberal arts college. James had planned on spending his summer traveling through Europe before moving to New York to study journalism at Columbia. All of this changed when his parents were suddenly poor and couldn't afford to send him to Europe as a graduation gift, and apparently couldn't afford to pay for grad school either (that was a shady grey area). James thus has to get *gasp* a job. Apparently in 1987 (did I mention it took place in 1987) no one ever had summer jobs and for some reason James graduated from college without having any jobs on his resume. That was his first mistake. Long story short, he has to work at the local amusement park for the summer. There he finds love, loses love, finds love, and generally just sits around. I won't ruin the ending, partly because I know Sarah was really excited to see this movie and partly because....there's really no way to ruin the ending. It just sort of ends.

Here are my problems.
1. I am an elitist asshole who has spent the past four years at one of the nations top liberal arts colleges and I, like James, have no idea what I'm going to be doing for the next year. I didn't need to be reminded of that in the movies.
2. None of the characters were likable. I rooted for all of them to fail miserably. When things worked out for the two lovers at the end I might have audibly groaned. None of them deserve any happiness in life.
3. I'm going to go ahead and write Sarah's comment to this entry right now and respond to it "You didn't understand the amusement park humor. You would have liked it more if you knew what it was like to work at an amusement park" Valid point, Sarah. Thank you for bringing it up. Here's the thing, there was no reference to any sort of amusement park specific shenanigans. I wanted amusement park shenanigans. I wanted people to screw with customers and make out on the tilt-a-whirl. The amusement park scenes (save a great scene with Bill Hader and a bat) consisted of the characters sitting around and saying things like "So, uh, you know Em....." "yea man, she's cute" "yea......." or "It's Lisa P!" "Man, Lisa P is hot" "yea......."
EDIT : I apologize for trying to read Sarah's mind. She agrees that the movie was crap. Please see her comment in the comments section as it is a work of brilliance.
4. Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig were incredibly underused. I want a movie of them and only them.
5. Kristin Stewert may be my least favorite actress....ever.

Long story short, terrible movie.

A Social Experiment

It has taken me two weeks to write this entry. Every day I think of writing it up, every day I open up blogger, every day I close it, unable to finish it. Here's the problem. Sarah and I have been best friends since freshman year of high school. We've hung out countless times over the past 8 years. When she came to visit, we did typical Sarah and Marianna things, such as watched television, stared at each other, and walked around. Stuff no one really cares about. We also did non-typical Sarah and Marianna stuff, like attend the Rockefeller St. Patrick's Day party. Unfortunately any description of this event would leave me completely unemployable. So anything I wrote was either boring....or unpublishable. Here is my best effort and I apologize that it cannot fully describe what was a fantastic weekend.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't mix friend groups. I used to think it was a great idea! What if all of my friends could be friends with each other!?!?! How great would that be!?!?! The problem is my neighborhood friends could never play nice. Once in 5th grade I brought a friend home from school. As we were hanging out in my front yard a pack of hooligans attacked with sticks and broomhandles. Their excuse was that they were hunting wild boar. That friend never came back.

Later in life a group of friends from high school came over. Again we were hanging out in the front yard when my 8 year old neighbor came out of his house waving an antique rifle around. While I assume it was not loaded....really you can't be too sure these days. Those friends never came back.

I resigned myself to keeping friend groups separate. One time Kelsey came to visit me at Bryn Mawr and I didn't even let her see my dorm while my friends were around, instead throwing her into my car and taking her to the mall. Another time Ch'nel came to visit and I took her to Dunken Donuts for a few hours, she still hasn't forgiven me for that one.

I was thus concerned when my friend Sarah e-mailed me and asked if she could come spend the night as she was on spring break. I have visited Sarah at her respective schools before and couldn't really think fast enough to come up with an excuse, so I agreed. I prepared her for different friends, going over their typical mannerisms and habits. I prepared my school friends for a friend visiting. Reminding them all of the time I brought a friend home and my hooligan neighbors beat her with sticks, implying that I didn't want to have to go through that again. After everyone agreed to be on their best behavior I sat back and waited.

Sarah arrived on the Friday afternoon of the first weekend of March Maddness. My tv antenna had recently broken so I was relying on a crappy cable that I had stolen from Princeton and connected to the wall for reception. It wasn't ideal, but it worked. When she pulled into The Mawr, there were numerous close matches just ending up, so she had to spend her first few BMC moments watching me leaning in towards my tiny television and squinting to see scores. She should be used to it by now.

After that finished up we went up to town to get delicious Bakery House cupcakes. I pointed out the landmarks along the way such as Sunoco, the abandoned Dunken Donuts, the abandoned Jaguar dealer and the abandoned pool supply store. You can really tell that the recession is hitting the Main Line when their pool supply store goes under...although that happened about 2 years ago. We snacked on cupcakes as we bought some supplies for the St Patricks Day party that night then headed back to campus.

It was time to take the plunge and introduce her to my friends. It was also dinner time, which meant introductions were unavoidable. I prepared her for everyone to stress out about dinner, needing to leave by exactly five or else terrible things would happen. Unfortunately when I got to the triple 5 minutes before dinner, no one was there. For some reason this was the one night that no one was ready for dinner on time. You've got to be kidding me! Four years of people freaking out if everyone's not ready for dinner at five and they have to pick tonight to relax that rule. I look like a douche.

Luckily we're able to round everyone up and begin introductions. They going swimmingly. I'm still not convinced this is going to work out, I'm ready for someone just to throw a punch, it never happens. Dinner is enjoyable, conversation pleasant, people seem happy. I begin to relax, maybe this will go well.

After dinner Sarah and I watch a few episodes of my new favorite television show "How I Met Your Mother" (FANTASTIC SHOW!) before heading over to the triple for some pre-party festivities. As we sat around we pulled out the romance novel that Megan found in the free box and played our favorite game "pick a random page and read whatever you see first out loud" Great game, fantastic book, we still haven't figured out the plot line, but we'll have it down by the end of the year.

Post book reading will not be described. Let's just move on to Saturday morning.

Good times.

I enjoy having visitors because it gives me a reason to go to Minellas diner for brunch the next morning, so of course Sarah and I drove over there as soon as we wake up. I proceeded to down three cups of coffee and four glasses of water to accompany my delicious french toast. If anyone is in the Main Line area I highly suggest Minellas.
Unfortunately I was under the impression that I had to go into Penn to work on my project so I had to bid adieu to Sarah soon after brunch ended. It was a quick visit, but a memorable one. For those of you who want to read more about what happened during my visit to Penn, please read a few entries below.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
After saying goodbye to Sarah and having my meeting at Penn cancelled right before I reached the city, I grabbed Ch'nel and drove up to Seton Hall University for my friend Stacey's birthday. Had a great night up there playing various television trivia games (which Stacey BEASTED us at) and learning Wii. I'm about 3 years behind this Wii craze, but I am slowly getting hooked. She and her roommate Melissa took us to a fantastic diner (gotta love the diners) the next morning where I had delicious banana pancakes.
So a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!! to Stacey

Long story short? A fantastic weekend filled with excellent brunches.
